A Moment of Misjudged Humor with Shah Rukh Khan
During the muhurat of Baby John, Shah Rukh Khan made a brief appearance to extend his support to the team. Wamiqa Gabbi accompanied by her brother Hardik found herself contemplating what to say if the superstar approached her. In a light-hearted jest her brother suggested she say something dramatic. Taking the joke further when Khan did approach her Gabbi quipped “It was so nice meeting you sir, my brother was suggesting I cut my wrist but obviously I won’t do that.” The remark intended as humor was met with silence. Khan perhaps taken aback quietly departed. Gabbi later realized that her attempt at dark humor had not landed as intended leading to a moment of introspection.
Wamiqa Gabbi had already made a name for herself in Punjabi films and shows like Modern Love Mumbai but her big break came when she landed a lead role in Baby John a film starring Varun Dhawan and Keerthy Suresh. The movie was presented by Atlee the filmmaker behind Jawan which starred Shah Rukh Khan. While Atlee directed Jawan Baby John was directed by Kalees with Atlee backing the project.
At the films launch event (muhurat) Atlee invited Shah Rukh Khan to show his support. This was Wamiqas first time meeting the superstar in person. But as she later shared the interaction didn’t go quite the way she had imagined.
The Journey to ‘Baby John’
Baby John directed by Kalees and produced by Atlee is a Hindi adaptation of the Tamil film Theri. The film features Varun Dhawan in the lead role with Gabbi portraying a significant character. Despite the film’s underwhelming performance at the box office Gabbi’s involvement marked a significant step in her transition from regional cinema and OTT platforms to mainstream Bollywood.
Gabbi’s Rising Stardom
Wamiqa Gabbi’s career trajectory has been noteworthy. From her early roles in Punjabi cinema to acclaimed performances in web series like Grahan and Modern Love Mumbai she has showcased versatility and depth. Her portrayal in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Khufiya further cemented her reputation as a formidable talent in the industry.
